about

novemthree is the project of Pythagumus Marshall from the state of Washington in the US. He plays, by himself, very relaxing modern folk, with mixed influences of nature and personal experiences. A thing which makes novemthree's music very enjoyable is the variety of instruments, especially the emphasis on accompanying the songs with a selection of percussion instruments. This little EP consists of instrumentals and regular songs, where Pythagumus displays a very subdued, peaceful way of singing.

The peacefulness of the delivery can be deceptive at times, if you forget to listen to the lyrics. "a celebration of" is perhaps the most straightforward, celebrating spring, and also human fertility. But a track like "a mother's wish" harbours more feelings than just calm serenity. It's obvious that the departure of Pythagumus' mother left a deep mark on his life, and that is expressed in this song, as well as in some other elements in the album. At the same time, there is enough happiness on the album as well. The liner notes make everything as clear as they ought to be: "This album is about the two most influential women in my life. One that I struggle to accept the loss of, and the other I hope to be with forever..."

These personal feelings are often a rich well to draw from, and they help make this EP a very nice release. The musical variation in novemthree's brand of foresty folk also helps a lot. But then there is also the wonderful sleeve this 3" comes in. High quality thick green carton, nice prints, and sewn together to top it off perfectly. It's designs like this that make the DIY aspect of this scene so appealing. So, although this edition of 99 is practically sold out, I still recommend it to everyone who enjoys calm acoustic music. - Oscar Strik (Evening of Light)
